Can All Seafarer Positions Apply for a Seaman Loan? A Guide for Filipino Seafarers

Yes — officers, ratings, and most other sea-based positions onboard a vessel can apply for a seaman loan with us

A seaman loan can cover a range of expenses, including tuition, home improvements, family support, or other financial priorities.

Please note that eligibility to apply does not constitute final loan approval. Every application undergoes a thorough evaluation of submitted documents, employment records, and repayment capacity. For Filipino maritime professionals, understanding these requirements in advance ensures a streamlined application process and minimizes potential processing delays.

Who Qualifies for a Seaman Loan?

  • Any deck or engine officer

  • Any rating or crew member, in any onboard position

  • A sea-based seafarer with a valid POEA/DMW contract — whether you're preparing to board or already deployed

  • An allottee (the family member or beneficiary designated to receive a qualified seafarer's salary)

For Non-Eligible Applicants: A Gentle Disclaimer

  • A fisherman

  • A land-based worker or OFW not deployed onboard a vessel

Please note: Our current loan program is specifically structured for sea-based personnel only. We hope to expand our offerings to land-based OFWs and commercial fishers in future program updates.

What Documents Do You Need?

Having your documents ready ahead of time can make the application process faster and more convenient.

At Macondray Finance, we ask seafarers and their allottees to have at least one of the following documents on hand: a passport, allotment slip, POEA/DMW contract, seaman's book, or latest proof of billing.

It's also worth double-checking that your documents are valid and up to date — missing or inconsistent information can lead to extra requirements or delays in processing.

What Should You Consider Before Getting a Loan?

A loan can help cover a specific financial need, but it should still fit comfortably within your repayment capacity.

Before applying, figure out exactly how much you need and what it will be used for. Borrowing more than necessary simply means a bigger repayment obligation down the line.

Look closely at the interest rate, repayment period, fees, and total amount you'll be expected to repay. A loan advertised with a low interest rate should still be judged by its complete terms, not just the headline rate.

At Macondray Finance, we currently offer our Seafarer's Loan at up to ₱500,000, with interest rates as low as 1.99% and a maximum term of 8 months, subject to qualification and evaluation. We are a licensed financial institution registered with the SEC and have been serving Filipino families since 1991.
